Today is my birthday!  Yeah!  I'm finishing my ahemmm my 59th year and beginning a decade year - my 60th year.

This picture was taken on the celebration of completing my 50th year.  All those kids are my nieces and nephews --- update - one graduated college, three are in college, and the remaining four are in secondary school.  I'm glad to report that all are doing quite well.

Beginning this year will be different.  I'm not sure how yet.  There won't be any fanfare, no rockets blasting, instead a quite day.  I have decided to write on my blog more, read more, make plans to enjoy friends and family, and work on a challenge or two or three throughout the year.

This quote was  posted on my FB page,  It does sum up items that you can do for a great year.    Some of these I do, some I wish I did more often.  Of course 'wishing' doesn't get it done - doing - gets it done!

My birthday is often 'cancelled' due to snow.  Three years ago - all set for taking me out to dinner, calling a cab so I didn't have to drive and then Mother Nature said 'no way' and delivered about 25 inches of snow.   It was kinda cool and really pretty outside.

Tomorrow looks no different - ice, snow, rain though it may reach to 36degreesF.  Wow - like almost beach weather.  Those you you reading along - in New England we have been in the single digits and with a howling wind bringing us down to negative double digits!

The number of the birthday is just a number representing the time on earth.  Heck the guys at the TV station here where I volunteer think I'm in my 40's - so I'm loving that!

My new year begins today.  I will add to my already interesting journey - I'll call this year -  Living my 60th year.  Come on along!

Jessica's Day at Camp

Day 2 was great.  I had a little time and went out to the backyard pool.  Denise & I floated about and Chris continued to splash us up.  It was lovely, while the water really warm, nice to relax.  Unfortunately I didn't pay attention and about an hour later, I was sun burned!  Yes - ouch - I was warmed by the glow for three days.

This day was a long time in coming.  I had made plans in January to surprise Jess for her 16th birthday.  There was some family responsibilities I had to take care of and had to postpone the visit.

So a belated Happy 16th Birthday for Jessica.  Her choice for the day was to go to the St. Louis Art Museum.  As she put it, "Aunt Patty will take me".  There was one requirement by me, it had to be a dress up day.

So off to the museum we went.  The building was built for the 1904 World's Fair.  It is grand and very stately and subsequently the museum moved in.  It is also undergoing a massive expansion that is expected to open January 2012.  We went over the the front desk to get information and a map.  Did I mention the is no admission to the museum?  That is right for the museum as a whole is free, only the special exhibits needed a ticket.    The exhibit, The Mourners, a must see.  We went to the desk to get information from one of the hosts.  I had some questions and our host was just lovely and explained all about the museum.  He slipped us two tickets for the exhibit.  The exhibit - amazing - 40 figures sculpted from white alabaster dating back to 1404.

After getting our map and thanking our host for the information, we made our way around the vairous galleries.  Jess thought he was "hot" for me.  LOL!! 

One of my highlights was to see Jessica's eyes as we rounded each corner of the galleries.  Being in the same space as so many famous artists always gives me chills.  She would exclaim, "I studied that in school".  A real treat was to see part of Claude Monet's Water Lilies.  Ever since my visit to Paris and immersing myself into French Impressionism, Monet is one of my favorites.  There is something about being in the prescence of great art that is humbling and exhilarating in the same breath.  When I see it, I reminds me that - all is possible.

Before we knew it, time had flown.  We were full of all the art we saw and now hungry for dinner.  We had a few minutes to make it over to the Loop for dinner at The Melting Pot.  I ordered a split of champagne so Jess could taste and I toasted her.  She picked out each of the courses.  Our beginning was a Spinach and Artichoke Swiss with vegetables and bread cubes.  The cheeses were just delightful !  Then on to a brightly made salad. 

The main course was a Coq Au Vin cooking broth and a full assortment of fishes, chicken, beef, and an extra order of lobster all with individual sauces.  Wow - this was really good. Jess had tuna steak for the first time!  We relaxed, talked about school, summer, which sauce was best with each item we cooked.

The menu at the Melting Pot covers just about everything.  You couldn't go away hungry.  What you could go away with, is just a great satisfied feeling of great fresh food served in a fun way.

Then on to dessert - a chocolate fondu with fruits and cakes.  Yes we had room for chocolate!  This is all that was left.  Mind you if the pot wasn't so hot, we would have scraped every last spec of chocolate.  When we looked at our watch, it was three hours later.  Isn't dining, great food and great company, just fine.

This was a special time for me.  I'm sure we will have some more dates like these in the future.  Thanks Jess!

An Important Date just passed

While I was away from by keyboard this past week, an important date passed. When I got back of course there is lots to do, the cat, the mail, the email, and catching up on blogs. Now if you need cables, yes you, cables for the tv, the computer or other electronic equipment call my little bro the cable guy to get your cables at the best prices on the net. opps - I got off track!

HAPPY BIRTHDAY SHELBY!

Last year I wrote birthday wishes for each of my nieces and nephews. It was fun to take some time and wish them the best. 2008 wishes for Shelby can be found here. Now I did remember to call my niece twice and send her a singing card as I knew I'd be away.

Now this year she is 14 years old. I'm in the process of making her 'big girl blanket' . Updates can be found on my Creative Sources blog. Shelby is a remarkable young lady. She and her school mates have gone before the MO legislature to let them know that MO needs to have a smoking ban in buildings. These kids made the news, and the MO legislature, while not voting it in now, the MO legislature is now listening to these kids! She loves to partake in soccer, music and let me not forget that she is her school play!

So Miss Shelby - go out there, remember to enjoy each day even when the homework piles up, you will be successful in what you choose to do, so while it is a couple of days late..... play the card I sent you and Happy Birthday wishes from the blog!

Birthday Boy Tim ! Happy 50th!

Last year I wrote this great birthday wishes for my middle brother Timmy. I was just learning this blog writting and loading pictures.

It's now another year - Tim - just finshed his 50th year! Congratulations. For his 49th year a bit of my tribute to his great guy.

For another birthday wish to Tim, my little brother - the only one left in his 40's (but not for long!) wrote on his blog. Now really - It is cool to turn 50!

A Dig

Today I had lunch with a long time friend of mine, Bob. We go back quite a long time, he's a brilliant CS guy with an amazing wife, (hi Pat) and great daughters. Bob is one of my first clients where we have done the entire assignment paper free several years ago. It's great to continue to use the technology when both of us knew the main frame as the "answer" back some decades ago.

Like many brilliant folk, you love what you do and do what you love. Yet you have many, many interesting hobbies and interests. One of Bob's is to go on archaeological digs right here in CT. He's found lots of indian heads or flint heads, shards of pottery and even a large pot from about 1800. There are some real scientific methods to doing the dig. After a brief discussion, I may be able to volunteer on a new dig that is going on not too far from here. I just love a new adventure!

Happy Birthday Taylor!

So where does the time fly.... You were about a year old and I still had my braces on!

I was so happy we had a few minutes earlier today to speak about your life, HOBY for the second time and to be able to wish you a happy birthday. So here's a PMA for your BDAY! If everyone could have a little PMA, we would have a better place. Then I know that where ever you go, you'll be spreading the "word" and bringing along the PMA, and we will all be enriched that you have come our way.

It's amazing to remember the phone call that I received from your Dad that said you arrived. A First! So from one First to another First, full speed ahead. So here you are today... turning 17, your Dad must be losing whatever hair he has left LOL JK. I'll say that I'm very proud of you, and know that what you have accomplished in all endeavours to date, a great young lady, good athlete, super student, and just an all around nice person is echoed by all that know you.

This upcoming year will be so remarkable - take time to enjoy it all, take moments to laugh and sing, to pray, to have fun and work, and just love each day.

Happy Birthday Uncle Bob

Happy Birthday Uncle Bob,

You'll probably have to see this on mom's computer since you won't turn yours on!

So how will you spend this year? A few more ache & pains - not you. You'll enjoy a great year. With eight grand nieces and nephews - there is so much going on. Of course your new puppy you recieved this past Christmas Eve will continue to keep you busy (though I think you'll need a few more batteries!)

You were the one to travel the world, enjoy the five star resturants and the theatre, visit with friends from all over. (can you tell these two are brothers - they even dressed the same!)

Always quite generous, our Christmas Eve dinner is a very special evening out for all of us. Really, we so love our sushi!

An animal lover - while this one isn't little Bobby - she and you were great buddies. It was a safe place for Tasha (the only dog that matched mom's paisley sofa).

So it's a new year - what will you do? What ever you decide - May you have lots of health, happiness, your tax refund and slush fund, and enjoy each day - Happy Birthday UB!

Gifts vs Gift Cards

Now the holidays have ended I thought it be time to think about the gift giving vs. the gift cards.

I'm an old fashion girl - I want to shake the box, have it wrapped with pretty paper and of course with ribbons and bows. There is still a 'little kid' in me that is excited when then box is there with my name on it. In my family - the gift with the "special paper from grandpa" - was generally a really good one. It doesn't matter the holiday, or birthday, or the just because gift, it's really fun to get a gift all wrapped up just for me. If you wonder how come ...... well this guy loved a good present and we all could count of him to wear the bow!

I guess the use of gift cards could be due to being a bit more ecological, or is it that there isn't enough time to think of that special gift, it seems that the citizenery has fallen to giving a 'gift card'. It's easy, takes only the time to stand in line, and voila, gift is done. Heck you can order them oline and have them shipped to the receipent.

I do believe gift cards have their place in the gift world - such as assisting the receipent to purchase a big ticket item; then there is the on-line comodities like music or cell/text minutes, and limiting the receipent to where they can shop. All in all, the card issuers really win!

Some interesting statistics - some 50 million adults purchased gift cards last year; the receipent (61% of them) spent more than the original amount of the card; Americans use 83% of the cards issued worldwide; receipents, more than 54% of them, need to make at least two trips to the store to use up the card's value; and the drum roll please...... 33% of the total value of a card is never used or redeemed. In 2004, there was an etimated $17.34 BILLION in gift card sales! You do the math!

This year I recieved some gift cards that I'll add to my other cards that still have a balance, some really nice home made gifts like the bread made by my cousin/godchild, and a really cool gift in a box with fancy paper and a bow (thanks mom & dad)! I'm thankful for all, just wished for more boxes with pretty paper and a bow!

You are an amazing young man - quite talented, good at school, likes lots of sports and a great scout! I especially like the weaving you made for me. It was one of the first things I unpacked in my new home. I think of you often, especially when I see it in my studio.

Happy Birthday Seamus

Happy Birthday Seamus,
And with luck on your special day ..... a snow day! As I write in your honor right now, the flakes have begun to fall. It's your Lucky 7th!

The newest member to my extended family. Master Seamus is a most AWESOME young man. He's been a repeat visitor at the Yelof Inn and Spa. You are the kind of kid you generally have an amazing time with. He and I ran around as he put it "for two nights and three days" taking care of business then going out for fun. We "did lunch", went to the library, brought Santa into Hartford, watched movies together, learn to read books and generally have a great time.

Now you are going to enjoy yet another amazing year - it's time to continue to read, study math and science in school, play lots!, be kind to your brother and sisters. Live each day with joy, remember to brush your teeth, be kind and thankful.

It's My Birthday!!!! And my 100th Blog Entry

Happy Birthday to me, Happy Birthday to me, Happy Birthday to meeeeeee, Happy Birthday to me.

I've just (at 2:56pm today, the 12th) completed my 53rd year - wow it's been a heck of a ride! I'd do it all again if I was given the chance - would not change one thing! As to my 100th blog - how appropriate to be able to make it my own birthday wishes.

This new year will have its challenges, yet I am looking ahead with more than my glass half full attitude. Getting excited about a day has been what I live for. Of course with the age of technology, we have the opportunity as individuals in the bigger picture to get-together "viritually" . I've begun to receive good wishes from friends far and near. Thanks to Dan in Georgia, Shawn in California, Dirk & Leila in Storrs, and a whole host of friends I saw today at Jerry's birthday party.

This past year has proved to be quite the year of events. Between tax season; clients selling and buying businesses; realigning myself in my volunteer work; being awarded CT 2008 Individual Achievement award for a Friend of a Library; making a major change with a move to a new home, of course the office too; bringing Stanley to the family picnic; begin a blog or two or three, set up YouTube, Facebook and Twitter; selling my old home; giving up ten days to take care of the St. Louis kids; have guests stay at the new home; find Bob the carpenter and work him almost around the clock to get me settled in; unpack my christmas decorations and decorate my new home; and make it to Christmas Eve, pictured here, for our 'annual dinner out' courtsey of Uncle Bob. Inbetween all of that I've worked well at my business, made several crochet projects, attended activities at the Lace Guild, continue to run and grow the membership of the Friends of the Lucy Robbins Welles Library's.

Today is your birthday - a special day to celebrate YOU! While you share the day with your sister, it's still the most important day. I think I can say, for anyone that has met you, you are quite the quintential young lady - especially in pink.

I enjoyed your stay with me this past summer. Picking out the plants for the herb garden and planting the red flowers and surprising Ms. Julie. Of course there is "your plant" in my garden that reminds me every day you were here to visit. The two of us going for ice cream and "being Turnpike chicks at Mort's" was cool. Of course the trip to the Library to find new stories to read. Hope you'll come to stay again !

For you, today - I wish you lots of pink, great studies at school, pink pigs, even the piggy slippers for Christmas. There is a big world out there just waiting for a smart girl like you. Lots to do and see!

Happy Birthday Miss Jordan,

I'm amazed at how the time has flown and how you have evolved from a cute little kid to a "new" teenager. Congratulations at getting out of "tweenies" with out much struggle.

Now with the onset of the teen years - it is an amazing ride. All of us have been there, and I'll be the first to say that some days are sooooooooooo long you think they'll never end, then there are some that will flash by in a minute or two and you'll be sad they are over.

Making memories are what each day is about. So when you lay your thoughts down at the end of the day, say your thanks, remember the good you accomplished for you and those that are around you.

This new year takes you to new challenges - you made the cheerleading team

at school- so practice your cheers and be sure to stretch out first!; enjoy going to gymnastics - it's a great time to get really focused on your skills; time to become a young lady - so love yourself first; dream lots of dreams - they are the true path to moving ahead.

What a linking of events..... believing that my decision to come back to Central to finish my degree would have had my brother make his college decision to also attend this fine institution! Then he meeting you - we got the best of that one! Now some two decades later..... you are still with us! Since you are the one generally behind the camera - that meant I had to look far and near to find a couple of pictures to celebrate you.

May this year be filled with lots off good wishes - We have all been blessed to have you join our family. How many moves, from CT (the tempy CT home) to PA and now in MO - pretty good, and you have always been a gracious hostess.

Keeping the kids' schedules is a monumental effort - I did get a taste of it for a few days, though you had most of the bases covered. Who goes where, when and with who.... quite the logistics director. Besides that, you have been quite instrumental in bringing up four beautiful children.

So now on to more adventures - though it will take some creativity to top the "H.O.W. 2008 Summer Tour", I'm sure you have some ideas up your sleeve.

Hi Jessica,

Today - I wish you a Happy Birthday - the best birthday yet. My recent visit only confirms how absolutely wonderfully you are growing up to be an outstanding young woman.

Your parents called you their little Buddha, you liked to watch the symphony at three years old, actually being three also gave you your first opportunity to drive the family mini van even if it was only in the garage! Then you drove at a later date, it was a tough day - glad you don't want a red car and prefer a truck! Your muscial talent is great, your voice, so lovely! Good Luck in the upcoming concert!

You were my inspiration to begin my crocheting once again - just in time for your 1st Christmas I was able to make for you my first baby blanket. Since then an original scarf, a poncho and I am now completing your blanket of your choice.

On our visit, you help remind me of the challenges you are faced with at school. While it is decades later, there are differences, like the songs on the top of the charts, politics, fashion trends. Though I may not have the answers for all of them today.... I will tell you to follow your heart and head - you have excellent ones. Remember we learn from all those who cross our paths, and I'll always be in your corner and available to you whenever you want.

So my dearest niece, my special godchild, Congratulations on your birthday 2008! May this coming year bring you lots of successes, fun, happiness, and that you continue to dream.

Now there are lots of stories about the long road for you to come to be with us. I'm so glad you joined us! Your dad so wanted a son, 1st there was Taylor, then Jessica, when Shelby was to arrive - I predicted it wasn't going to be you. That day was still coming. I told your Mom.... hold out to All Saints Day........ and we, all the family, was and is blessed with having you in our family.


I know that your Mom & Dad are so proud of you.

I hear there was a math test - 26 out of 26 - pretty darn good!! We will have to celebrate when I get there in a few more days!

So you are now 13 years old - A first official teen year. I remember the day your Dad called from the hospital to let me know that you arrived - and that you were a girl (I told him !) and that you would be named Shelby.

I said - why did you name her after a British sports car? Later it was said that your Mom like the name from a movie she saw. I've seen the movie and it is great. You are as beautiful - I think more so - than the actress called by the same name.

You are such a gem - we all enjoyed your tales of Shelbyville and I especially loved your time with your fairy princess dress that Christmas - You would wear it all the time.

Fast forward and wow you are a tremendous young lady - talented and so funny!

So Tim, Timmy, Liam

You have just finished your 49th year and beginning your 50th year. I don't know when you passed me out as I still feel like a kid of 30something. You are getting ready to join the Club. Now that I figured out how to put in pictures, (we are all in trouble), it's fun.

Being the oldest and only sister(another blog on that), Tim was welcomed to our family just two years after my brother Mike. There was nothing usual about my new brother. He got the straight hair and long eye lashes! He was fun and full of spirit, and still is. He attended a special elementary school , then on to trade school to become a chef. Being creative is so natural for him. He can look in anyone's fridge and make a dinner out of its contents. He married a lovely lady, Sandy. The two of them are so good. They then adopted two pembrok corgies, Kirby and Clohe. (note - need a picture of the "kids").

Of course, please add your own stories/memories, here are a few of mine.

Being four kids, all with healthy appetities, Tim would hide fruit in the wonder bread loaf, right where the ballons cover the bag. That way he would have a piece of fruit when we would run out.

Guinea pigs - we had lots of them. I remember something with going to Mrs. Moore's on Saturday mornings with Tim and getting or giving them some of ours

Tim's van - yes it was back in the 70's and he had a really great van until a deer hit him! You'll have to ask him about that one. Though I do remember he was working at a restuarant when he took a fresh deer in and I asked for venison when it wasn't on the menu for my birthday dinner. It was so good! (the only time I didn't order "real" veal).

Living at the Penthouse in New Haven - what a nice pad! I remember that's when Sh-t Head came to be his little princess .....

Escaping from the hospital - he took a fall and hit his head, a freak accident. While he didn't think it was a big deal , Tim never does, he had quite the concussion that required hospitalization. I remember getting the call at college and running down to see him but he escaped and no one knew where he went. "I was bored and wanted real food or was it a coffee" is as close to the words I remember when he returned to the hospital.

Christmas eve dinner at Mike's in Black Rock? Did you finally arrive?

Bottles of wine - yep you can count on my brother to know his wines. I remember him getting a case of assorted bottles from CA. They were all good, even when I did cellar them for quite a while!

Birthday Wishes

Happy Birthday to my brother Mike. He finished his 51st year today. Leaving him happy bday voice mail was unsatisfying yet it had to do for today.

Shame on me for not getting a bday card ready in advance. I'm slipping on my organizing. I'll get to see him on Friday afternoon when he deposits his third child, Savannah, for her "aunt patty" sleep over.

His 51 years has been full of adventure. He was the first boy in the family (I've three younger brothers) so he was a first to do Indian Guides, Cub Scouts, Boys Scouts, Soccer at high school, summer musicals, playing guitar (?? don't know if he still continued) and do I remember the trumpet? Mike was the kid that went to the dairy with Dad and brought home the milk and a cat!

He took off to the SeeBees on a tour getting out just before the Faulkin incident. I was thankful for that. Yet the Navy offered him a trade - now a master electrician - and a chance to see some of the world. The hot spot of Gitmo, and the cold and dark of Iceland were the notable ones I remember. I still wear a gauze dress he brought back from one of the islands and the red plaid wool icelandic blanket has travel with me just about everywhere I could drive.

Back to stateside he worked in many related electrical fields, and ran his own company doing electrical contracting. Besides outfitting my home with great light switches (now I have to do it again) and timers and such, he came up at my parents request to install a security system in my condo after I was robbed for the second time.

He then married and he and his wife have four lovely children, Jordan, Spencer, Savannah, and Seamus.

This little quip barely scratches the surface of what his 51years have been. Yet.... Happy Birthday Mike.......... may you have another 51 more!
